Why Breasts Leak During Feeding
When your baby sucks, the let-down reflex starts in both breasts, even the one not being fed from. This reflex ensures your baby gets enough milk and maintains milk production. Leaking is natural and a sign your body is working properly.
Tips to Reduce Leaking
- Gently press the nipple: Place your finger on the nipple as if pressing a button to slow the flow.
- Use your whole hand: Cover the breast briefly to stop dripping.
- Milk collection cups: Place in your bra to collect milk that would otherwise be wasted. This milk can be frozen for later use.
Nursing Pads and Bra Inserts
Nursing pads come as disposable or reusable options and protect clothes from stains. Change pads often if leaking heavily to avoid irritation or yeast infections.
Skin Care and Hygiene
- Wash nipples gently with lukewarm water.
- Air dry as much as possible.
- Use clean nursing pads and replace regularly.
Extra Everyday Tips
- Keep spare pads in your bag when out.
- Have a small towel handy for quick cleanups.
- Use thin night-time pads to prevent leaking while sleeping.
