When you become a parent, baby clothes are a "must" that can easily turn into a passion. There are so many adorable garments available in comfortable materials, cute and practical designs, and delightful colors and patterns. If you're already feeling the urge, remember that babies grow quickly during the first year. It's a good idea to stock up in advance with a small supply of the tiniest sizes: 44, 50, and 56 (these numbers correspond to centimeters, which is the baby's length) so that you're prepared when you come home from the maternity ward. Depending on how small or big your newborn baby is, it's good to have a few options. If a garment turns out to be too small, you can always return it as long as you keep the price tag. Clothes that are initially too big will eventually fit. Depending on the time of year your baby is born, you'll need different types of clothing.
Winter time
In winter, warm clothes are essential for outdoors, but indoors, you shouldn't overdress your baby. Feel the back of your baby's neck, as it's the perfect gauge of warmth. If the neck is sweaty, you can remove a garment or two; if the neck is cold, add more layers. Babies' hands and feet are generally a bit cooler than the rest of their bodies, so outdoor mittens are necessary. Some soft socks indoors and cosy booties outdoors are comfortable for their little feet.
Socks
When your baby is a newborn, you need socks that stay on their feet without being too tight. Soft, ribbed socks usually work well. You hardly need to wash socks during the early days, so don't buy too many tiny socks. If you want to get socks in advance, stock up on two pairs in size 10-12 and two pairs in size 13-15.
Outdoor booties
When it's cold outside, a pair of soft booties can be comforting, a mix between slippers and shoes to keep baby feet warm. If you need booties for your newborn, go for the smallest size. Make sure the toes aren't pressing against the front, as that's a sign it's time for a larger size. If you find that the booties keep slipping off, using mitten clips can help keep them in place.
Spring attire
Spring weather can be quite changeable. Dress your baby in layers so you can remove, open up, or add more clothing depending on the temperature, weather, and wind. As spring gets warmer and moves towards summer, you can remove the outermost layer and keep the middle layer.
Summer time
During summer, lightweight clothing is the way to go. The layering principle still applies, so you can add or remove garments based on the temperature. Remember to protect your baby's head from the sun; small sun hats with chin ties are always a good choice.
Autumn
Even in autumn, layering works well because the weather and temperature often change. Use the "warmth gauge" of the neck to feel if your baby seems warm or cool. Add or remove clothing based on how the neck feels.
When it's time for shoes
Towards the end of the first year, most children begin taking their first steps. Trying out their ability to walk outdoors is usually popular, so the first shoes should be suitable for that. Flat, lightweight shoes with a high upper and a smooth sole are ideal; they provide stability, support the foot, and won't get stuck in the ground. Keep in mind that young children often sweat quite a bit, so make sure the material of the shoes is breathable.
