Baby development

All the necessary cells are now in place for me to continue my development into a human being!

At this stage, I am what you would call an embryo. Embryo means "something that grows". Cool, right? The embryo consists of three layers of cells, where each layer will form different parts of my little body.

The top layer forms the brain, nervous system and skin. The second layer forms legs, muscles, blood vessels and cartilage, while the third layer forms the stomach, intestines and liver. The part which will eventually be my nervous system, spine and brain will develop this week. Isn’t that fascinating? The coming weeks, up to and including week 10, are very important as all my organs will be formed during this time.

Mothers development

It is very common (and normal) to experience mixed emotions when you realise you are pregnant. It’s important to remember that all feelings are okay!

You are facing a tremendous transformation, physically, mentally and emotionally. Hormone levels may have already begun to affect you with mood swings, fatigue and tenderness in the breasts, or not. Some women do not experience any of the above symptoms, some have a tough time while others go through the entire course of the pregnancy free from any symptoms. No matter how your body responds, it is time to take care of yourself.

It’s recommended that you stop smoking as soon as you realise you are pregnant. Avoid smoking, snuffing or chewing tobacco altogether. The less tobacco the foetus is exposed to, the better. The same goes for alcohol. No one knows just how much alcohol can lead to lasting damage to the foetus, which is why it’s best to completely refrain from it once you have confirmed your pregnancy. In addition to the recommendations of abstaining from tobacco and alcohol, it is also important to eat properly.

Does it feel strange? A little difficult to understand what’s going on?

Planned or not, a lot of feelings are bound to surface, and that can be difficult to get a handle on. Even more so, since the physical changes aren’t happening in your body. This is a great opportunity to open up to one another. How does she feel? What are your thoughts as a partner? Only through talking can you begin to get a little more understanding of each other and maybe start accepting the fact that you are about to become parents!

Along with all the new things you need to think about comes a ton of differing tips regarding what pregnant women ought to eat. Perhaps you are the one who prepares the meals at home. Whatever the case may be, it might be a good idea to go through the recommendations about what is good to eat, as well as what to avoid while pregnant.
