9 weeks pregnant

Baby development

My eyes have got eyelids, the ears are in place and my little nose has become a lot more pronounced.

Even my fingers have grown out with the webbing between them almost gone. This week also sees the development of an important muscle — the diaphragm. This will make it easy for me to breathe later. My liver, spleen and bile also surface whilst my heart is fully developed. It’s an exciting time.

Internally, my genitals, that is, my ovaries or testicles, are formed, but external genitalia look the same. I still get some nutrition from the so-called yolk sac, but the placenta is slowly taking over that role. Once it no longer performs a function, the yolk sac will slowly wither and disappear.

The placenta will act as an extra organ since my lungs, intestines, liver and kidneys aren’t fully developed yet.

Mothers development

Your pants may start to feel a little snug around the waist with your uterus now twice as big as normal.

You may notice the emergence of tiny little bumps around your nipples. These are referred to as “Glands of Montgomery” or “Areolar Glands”. These glands produce an oily secretion that will lubricate the nipples and areola when it is time for breastfeeding. The secretion also contains antibacterial agents that counteract bacterial growth. A noticeable and not uncommon trait might be the deterioration of your skin with acne. You might also experience a little bleeding in your gums as they become tender. The mucous membranes are also affected by the pregnancy. Nasal congestion and nose bleeds are common. But not to worry. These symptoms are not dangerous.

Co-parent

Feeling left out? Does it feel like everything revolves around your pregnant partner and the upcoming child?

These aren’t unusual feelings and handling your partner's mood swings (due to the hormones) can also be difficult. Things can be tough, but this is when your presence and support are needed more than ever. All you can do for now is work hard, keep your head up high and know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
