Baby development
I have ribs, blood vessels and retinas. My hearing has now evolved so much that I can perceive sound.
However, my brain hearing centre is not fully developed so I don’t hear so well yet. The external genitals are fully developed and can be seen during an ultrasound. However, I may be a little uncooperative, making it difficult to determine exactly what gender I am. So if my parents can’t wait until I’m born to find out my sex, they might still be surprised when I finally arrive.
look like a little person now, at last. But I need to grow into myself and develop more before I can survive outside the womb.
Mothers development
You have gone into the second trimester.
For most people, it will take a few more weeks before the baby’s movements can be felt, but if you have been pregnant before, you might already feel the baby moving around in there.
Notice a dark line on your belly? This is called linea nigra and is due to hormone changes. The line will fade and disappear after delivery. The nipples and patches also darken due to hormonal changes, but these too will also fade when the child is born. Your heart rate has now increased by 20% to cope with the increased oxygen needs for both you and the baby.
Co-parent
Have you perhaps jump-started with fetal diagnostics and seen the child already?
In other words, a lot is starting to happen now, and you will notice that most of your conversations will be about the child.
Lists with suggested names may have been written and similar to shopping lists, which tend to become long. Very long. But to save money and space before the child has arrived, keep in mind that what the child needs is a bed, clean clothes, diapers and a cosy teddy bear or blanket. There is more than half of the pregnancy to go, so there's plenty of time to shop and plan. And remember an important thing - even if it does seem overwhelming, everything will be fine in the end.
