Baby development

In addition to my livelier movements in the belly, my mother may even begin to feel more rhythmic movements. I've got hiccups!

Most babies may start hiccuping in the uterus, as a result of a less than developed diaphragm. Hiccups are harmless and nothing to worry about.

My capillaries, that is, the thin blood vessels that are just below the skin, are now starting to form and create a pink skin tone. Even the blood vessels in the lungs are formed. My nostrils, which have so far been clogged, are now open and I have begun to test out breathing. There is of course no oxygen in here, but I practice breathing with the help of the amniotic fluid.

Mothers development

Your night's sleep is likely to be affected a lot at this stage. Your dreams get a lot more colourful and are punctuated by pee breaks.

You’ll most likely also feel the baby's movements now. If you don’t or feel very little, contact your midwife or hospital. It may feel good to know that a child born this week has the opportunity to survive with the help of neonatal care, but we hope that the baby will stay in the belly for a while.

Your blood sugar level is checked once or more during pregnancy. One to three per cent of all prospective mothers suffers from so-called gestational diabetes – high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. If you have a genetic predisposition, the risk is slightly higher. If you are affected by diabetes during your pregnancy, it usually disappears after delivery. Contact your midwife if you are pregnant and think you have too high a blood sugar level.

Co-parent

It might feel a little difficult to fully express your feelings and concerns to your pregnant partner.

Partly because you’re not sure about your feelings and maybe also because you don’t want to worry her any more than you should. After all, it's a sensitive time for both of you - so talk to one another and find solutions to your concerns.

For example, signing up for a class for pregnant women and expectant parents is a good way to get prepped for the upcoming delivery.
