Baby development
I can now open my eyes!
The retina part of the eye is now developed which means I can now respond to light and darkness even if my vision is limited. The eye is not fully developed and the colour of my eyes belongs to the final phase of the development. It may take up to six months after birth until you can tell what colour my eyes are.
My vestibular system, which helps with my sense of balance and orientation, is also developed and I can perceive what's up and down. I can also recognise my parents' voices and respond when they speak.
Mothers development
Fat tissue is now being harvested around the hips and your breasts are growing bigger.
The increase in fat tissue may sometimes cause stretch marks which may not disappear completely after birth but fade away over time.
Your hands and feet swell easily and liquid can accumulate in the legs. Any inconvenience caused by this can be resolved by buying and using compression socks. Calf pain is also common and can interfere with your night's sleep. If you get cramps, you can angle your foot sharply upwards, or stretch out your calf muscle like when exercising, which should ease the feeling of discomfort. In case of severe cramps, you may want to try some extra magnesium vitamins, but be sure to consult your midwife first.

Is your partner moaning about swollen and numb legs and feet?
Giving massages can ease the discomfort caused by swelling and aching feet. If you feel like giving a massage is a skill set you don’t have, then perhaps you could take her to a professional who can do this. Even better yet, pamper her and yourself with a reservation at a health spa. Make a real day of it. Once the baby arrives there won’t be too many opportunities for moments like these…at least not in the beginning.
