1. Use the Layering Principle
Instead of overdressing your baby, use three layers:
- Base layer: Clothes closest to the skin, such as a bodysuit and leggings in wool or soft cotton.
- Middle layer: For warmth, e.g., a fleece or wool jumper and trousers.
- Outer layer: Protects against wind, snow, and moisture, e.g., a warm winter snowsuit.
2. Check Your Baby’s Neck
The neck is a reliable “thermometer.” If it’s sweaty, remove a layer. If it’s cold, add a layer. Remember that hands and feet are often cooler than the rest of the body.
3. Hats and Mittens
- Hat: A wool hat covering the ears and head is essential, especially if the snowsuit doesn’t have a hood.
- Mittens: If the suit has fold-over cuffs or your baby is in a footmuff, mittens may be optional. In very cold weather, mittens are still recommended. Use mitten clips to keep them in place.
4. Booties or Warm Socks
Protect tiny feet with woollen socks, fleece booties, or soft shoes. Use clips if needed to prevent slipping.
5. Extra Blankets and Layers
Always bring extra blankets, hats, and mittens for outdoor trips. Babies grow quickly, and small items can easily slip off.
6. Avoid Overheating
Newborns can overheat easily. Check the neck and watch for signs such as redness or sweating.
7. Adjust for Activity and Temperature
Keep your baby warm in a footmuff during walks, but adjust layers indoors. Layering makes it easy to regulate temperature.
Tip: Choose breathable materials that are soft on the skin and retain warmth. Wool, fleece, and cotton are ideal for winter.
