1. Use Layers
Instead of overdressing, use three layers:
- Base layer: Clothes next to the skin, like a onesie and leggings in wool or soft cotton.
- Middle layer: Keeps your baby warm, e.g., a fleece or wool sweater and pants.
- Outer layer: Protects against wind, snow, and moisture, like a warm winter snowsuit.
2. Check Your Baby’s Neck
The neck is a good “temperature gauge.” If it’s sweaty, remove a layer. If it’s cold, add a layer. Keep in mind that hands and feet are usually cooler than the rest of the body.
3. Hats and Mittens
- Hat: A wool hat covering the ears and head is important, especially if the snowsuit doesn’t have a hood.
- Mittens: If the suit has fold-over cuffs or the baby is in a footmuff, mittens might not be necessary. In very cold weather, mittens are still recommended. Use mitten clips to keep them on.
4. Booties or Warm Socks
Keep little feet warm with wool socks, fleece booties, or soft shoes. Clips can help prevent them from slipping off.
5. Extra Blankets and Layers
Always bring extra blankets, hats, and mittens for outdoor trips. Babies grow fast, and small items can easily slip off.
6. Avoid Overheating
Newborns can get too warm quickly. Check the neck and look for signs like redness or sweating.
7. Adjust for Activity and Temperature
Keep your baby cozy in a footmuff during walks, but adjust layers indoors. Layering makes temperature control easy.
Tip: Choose breathable fabrics that are soft on the skin and hold warmth. Wool, fleece, and cotton work best in winter.
