Step 1: Choose a date and location
Pick a date that suits the mum-to-be and her guests. Baby showers are usually held around weeks 28–35 of pregnancy. Also consider whether to host it at someone’s home, rent a venue, or have it outdoors if the weather is nice.
Tip: Send out a “save the date” early if you’re inviting many guests! Or create an event or group on Facebook to keep everyone updated.
Step 2: Choose a theme (optional, but fun!)
A theme sets the tone for the whole party – from decorations and outfits to games and cake. It could be anything from a colour scheme (e.g. neutral, pink or green) to more specific themes like “woodland animals”, “boho” or “afternoon tea”.

Step 3: Make a guest list and send invitations
Talk to the mum-to-be (or someone close to her) to create a guest list. Send out the invites in good time – ideally 4–6 weeks in advance.
Tip: Digital invitations via email or apps are easy and eco-friendly!
Step 4: Plan food and drinks
Decide whether you’ll have a buffet, snacks, afternoon tea or a full meal. Don’t forget to check for allergies or dietary restrictions. Non-alcoholic drinks are a must – why not serve fancy alcohol-free bubbly or lemonade?

Step 5: Decorations
Decorate with balloons, bunting, flowers, and signs to match the theme. Consider setting up a “photo corner” with props for guests to take pictures.
Tip: You can find lovely decorations even on a budget – DIY works great too!
Step 6: Prepare games and activities
Plan 2–4 games or activities suitable for both small and large groups. Some popular options include:
- Guess the baby’s birth date/weight
- Baby bingo
- Guess the baby food flavour
- Design a baby onesie

Step 7: Cake and dessert table
A beautiful cake is often the centrepiece of the baby shower. Add cupcakes, biscuits or a sweets table to complete the spread.
Tip: Match the cake to the theme – in both colour and decorations.
Step 8: Gifts and wish list
Ask if the mum-to-be has a gift registry, or create a shared list so the presents are both useful and varied.
Tip: Set up a group gift fund or chip in together for bigger presents.
Step 9: Thank-you gifts for the guests
Small gifts for guests are a lovely way to say thank you. Think mini soaps, candles or chocolates in cute little bags.
Step 10: Capture the memories
Appoint someone to take photos during the day – or rent a polaroid camera for some charming instant pics. A guest book where everyone can write a message to the baby is also a lovely touch.
