Breast Augmentation and Breastfeeding
A breast augmentation does not necessarily affect your ability to breastfeed. Implants are usually placed behind the mammary gland or the pectoral muscle, which does not interfere with milk production.
It is important to know:
- Breastfeeding usually works despite silicone implants.
- No research indicates that silicone is transferred to breast milk.
- Healthcare professionals can offer tips on breastfeeding techniques to make it easier.
Breast Reduction and Breastfeeding
In breast reduction surgery, milk-producing tissue is removed, often from the lower part of the breast. If tissue near the nipple is removed, the milk ducts can be affected, which may make breastfeeding more challenging.
Factors that influence this:
- The extent of tissue removal
- The placement of the incision
- Individual variation – some mothers can breastfeed despite surgery, while others cannot
There is no guarantee that breastfeeding will be successful after a breast reduction, but some women achieve it even with a moderate reduction.
Tips for Breastfeeding After Surgery
Regardless of the type of surgery, the following tips may be helpful:
- Talk to your midwife or lactation consultant before and after the birth.
- Try different breastfeeding positions to find what works best for you.
- Stimulate milk production through regular feeding sessions or hand expression if needed.
- Be patient – breastfeeding is a process that can take time, especially after surgery.
