How can you find out your baby’s gender?
There are a few reliable medical ways to find out your baby’s sex during pregnancy – if you choose to:
- Ultrasound: Around 18–20 weeks, a routine scan can often reveal the gender – if the baby is in a good position and you want to know.
- NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing): A blood test that can show the baby's sex as early as weeks 10–11, if it’s offered or ordered.
- Genetic testing: Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis are mostly done for medical reasons but can also show the gender early on.
Popular myths – what do people believe?
There are tons of old wives’ tales passed down through generations. Some of the most common include:
- High bump = girl, low bump = boy
- Morning sickness = girl, no sickness = boy
- Fast heartbeat = girl, slower heartbeat = boy
- Craving sweets = girl, craving salty = boy
- Shiny hair = boy, dull hair = girl
It’s fun to guess – but none of these are backed by science.
Is there any truth to the myths?
Nope! According to research, there’s no reliable link between symptoms, cravings, bump shape, or anything else and the baby’s gender. But hey – guessing can be a fun way to pass the time.
When can you find out for sure?
The only guaranteed way to know is through medical testing – or when your baby arrives! You can always choose to keep it a surprise.
Thinking about a gender reveal?
If you’ve found out the gender, you might want to celebrate with a reveal. Here are a few simple and fun ideas:
- Balloons with pink or blue confetti
- A cake with a hidden colored filling
- A sealed envelope from your provider to open with loved ones
Whether you find out or not, it’s your pregnancy – enjoy it your way. Until then, feel free to guess: girl or boy?
