Why do cravings happen during pregnancy?

The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but several factors seem to play a role:

  • Hormonal changes can affect taste and smell.
  • Morning sickness may make you crave foods that ease nausea, like sour or salty snacks.
  • Blood sugar fluctuations can trigger a desire for quick carbs.
  • Nutrient needs – sometimes your body is signalling a lack of something, like iron or calcium.

Common cravings – and what they could mean

  • Sweet foods (candy, chocolate, fruit): often linked to blood sugar swings.
  • Sour or salty (pickles, lemons, chips): may help ease nausea.
  • Ice chips: sometimes connected to iron deficiency.
  • Unusual cravings (dirt, clay, soap): called pica and should always be discussed with your doctor or midwife.

How to handle cravings

Cravings are usually harmless, but balance is important:

  • Listen to your body – but don’t overdo it. It’s fine to indulge occasionally, but aim for moderation.
  • Healthy swaps. Keep fruit, nuts, smoothies, or yoghurt available when cravings hit.
  • Keep blood sugar steady. Eating balanced meals with complex carbs can reduce strong cravings.
  • Stay hydrated. Sometimes thirst is mistaken for hunger.

When to call your provider

Most cravings are harmless, but reach out to your healthcare provider if you:

  • Crave non-food items (like dirt, clay, or soap).
  • Have cravings so strong they interfere with your health or daily life.
