Baby development
Nothing is growing and developing here yet!
It can be difficult to know exactly when conception takes place, so the beginning of pregnancy is counted from the first day of the last menstrual period - which is about two weeks before conception even takes place. After menstruation, the production of hormones pituitary gland increases. The hormone affects the ovaries and causes an egg to mature inside a bladder in the ovary. In the egg bladder, the hormone estrogen is formed. When the bladder ruptures, the egg loosens and the egg bladder is transformed into a so-called corpus luteum. The corpus luteum produces corpus luteum hormone, or progesterone, an important hormone that causes the lining of the uterus to grow and get ready to receive a fertilized egg.
In assisted fertilization (IVF), the beginning of pregnancy is calculated two weeks before the embryo is inserted into the uterus. The egg retrieval is counted as week 2+0 of the pregnancy.
Mothers development
You are not pregnant, yet… you're on your period right now.
Ovulation occurs about 14 days from the first day of the last menstrual period. However, it may vary slightly depending on whether your menstrual cycle is on:
- 25 days (ovulation between days 9-13)
- 28 days (ovulation between days 12-16)
- 34 days (ovulation between days 18-22)
When you are planning to get pregnant, it is wise to review your lifestyle. Healthy living habits are of course always good, but it is extra important before and during pregnancy. Get rid of bad habits as soon as you can, eat good food, and exercise regularly.

If any of you smoke, it's time to stub out!
Put tobacco (and alcohol) aside - they only have a negative effect on both fertility and pregnancy.
If you are planning to have children, it is recommended that your partner start taking folic acid supplements. Studies have shown that 400 micrograms of folic acid every day, until the twelfth week of pregnancy, reduces the risk of spina bifida in the baby.
