The Base: Sheepskin and Temperature Control
A sheepskin is a great base for both bassinets and strollers. It naturally regulates temperature and absorbs moisture – keeping your baby cool when it’s warm and warm when it’s cold. Make sure to choose a sheepskin suitable for children, as standard sheepskins may be chemically treated.
To check the stroller’s temperature, use a small thermometer or feel your baby’s neck – they should feel warm but not sweaty.
Fall: Layer Up
Fall weather can change quickly, so layering is key.
- Clothing: Jackets or sweaters with front zippers are easy to open if your baby gets too warm.
- Blanket: Wool blankets provide warmth while still allowing breathability. Choose one that can be folded double if needed.
- Protection: Bassinet covers or footmuffs shield against cold and wind.
- Rain cover: Choose one that’s easy to put on and remove for good airflow.
- Mittens and booties: Pick ones that stay on even when your baby moves.
Winter: Warm and Cozy
When temperatures drop, add extra layers.
- Sleeping bag: Protects against the cold without needing a heavy winter snowsuit.
- Wool overall: An extra layer under the sleeping bag for very cold days.
- Hands and feet: Thick mittens and socks that stay on are essential.
- Hat: A thicker hat to fully cover and warm the head.
Spring: Flexible Bedding
Spring weather can be just as changeable as fall, so similar strategies apply.
- Wool blanket: Can be adjusted by folding single or double depending on temperature.
- Clothing: Wool or fleece overall.
- Mittens and booties: Still important they stay on.
- Hat: Thin cotton hat protects against wind and spring sun.
Summer: Cool and Protected
In summer, make sure your baby doesn’t overheat.
- Sun protection: Use a UV-protective umbrella or stroller attachment.
- Mesh blanket: Provides a cozy feel but allows airflow.
- Clothing: Thin sun hat protects the head.
- Insect net: Keeps flies and wasps away.
- Blanket: Never cover the hood completely with a thick blanket – air must circulate.
