Heartburn and Acids
Heartburn is a common issue during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. Acid reflux can cause stomach acid to reach your mouth, which can damage tooth enamel. To protect your teeth, rinse your mouth with water after experiencing heartburn. Avoid brushing your teeth immediately afterward, as enamel is more vulnerable to damage after acid exposure.
Dry Mouth During Pregnancy
Hormonal changes can also lead to dry mouth during pregnancy. A dry mouth makes it harder to keep your mouth clean, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth hydrated, and use sugar-free gum or lozenges to stimulate saliva production.
Gum Inflammation and Pregnancy Gingivitis
Pregnancy gingivitis is a form of gum inflammation caused by hormonal changes. It makes your gums swollen and more likely to bleed. To prevent and ease this, brush gently twice a day and floss to remove plaque between your teeth.
Regular Dental Visits
It is especially important to attend regular dental check-ups during pregnancy to detect any potential problems early. Always inform your dentist that you are pregnant so they can provide appropriate recommendations and avoid procedures that could affect your baby.
Pregnancy can bring various dental health concerns, but with proper care and preventive measures, you can maintain healthy teeth. Remember to maintain good oral hygiene and visit your dentist to ensure both you and your baby have excellent dental health.
