How to Perform Scar Massage After a C-Section
After a C-section, it's common for the scar tissue to feel tight and stiff. This fibrous tissue, made up of collagen, can limit mobility and cause discomfort. By performing scar massage, you can help the scar tissue become more elastic and flexible, which can reduce discomfort.

It’s normal for a scar after a C-section to initially be red, slightly raised, and for you to experience tingling or reduced sensation in the area. Although the healing process starts right away, it can take up to a year for the nerve fibers to fully recover and for the scar to be completely healed both visually and emotionally.
For scar massage to be effective and safe, you should wait 4–6 weeks after the surgery before starting, but only if the scar is fully healed. It should not be weeping or feel warm. Here’s how you can proceed:
Stretch the skin around the scar: Place your fingers near the scar and pull the skin in different directions to increase mobility and soften the area. Do this over the entire scar and repeat several times.
Direct scar massage: About 12 weeks after the C-section, you can start massaging directly on the scar. Press moderately with your fingertips, making sure your nails are short to avoid injury. It shouldn’t hurt, but you may experience slight discomfort. Massage by:
- Circling your finger along the length of the scar.
- Moving your fingers up and down over the scar.
- Gently pinching along the scar with your thumb and index finger.
- Rolling the skin between both thumbs and index fingers.
- Gently stroking over the entire scar.
Focus especially on the areas that feel tight or less flexible. Depending on how much discomfort you have, you can massage anywhere from several times a day to once a week.
