1. What happens to your skin during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, hormones like oestrogen and progesterone increase, which can affect the skin. Some women notice a healthy glow and rosy cheeks, while others experience acne, sensitivity or pigmentation (melasma). It’s all completely normal – your skin is changing, and it may vary from week to week.
Tip: Accept that your skin is changing – your body is doing something amazing right now!
2. Safe skincare during pregnancy
Pregnancy isn’t the time to experiment with strong acids or active ingredients. Choose products that are labelled safe for pregnancy. Avoid retinol, high doses of salicylic acid and essential oils. Focus instead on ingredients that hydrate, calm and support your skin barrier.
Look for: niacinamide, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera.
3. Tips for pregnancy acne
Hormones can trigger acne – even in women who’ve never had it before. Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser morning and evening, and avoid picking at your skin. Speak to your midwife or a skincare specialist before using any acne treatments.
Remember: Always choose products safe for pregnancy.
4. Keep your skin hydrated
Your skin is working overtime during pregnancy. Dryness, tightness and itching are common – especially on the belly, breasts and thighs. A nourishing body oil or cream helps maintain elasticity and may reduce the risk of stretch marks.
Tip: Apply lotion after a shower while your skin is still damp.
5. Protect your skin from the sun
Pregnant women are more prone to melasma – dark patches of pigmentation on the face. That’s why sun protection is essential every day, year-round. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ and wear a hat or cap for extra protection.
Tip: Sunscreen should always be the final step in your morning skincare routine.
